CHAPTER SEVEN

OH, GOD, WHY did you have to wear a skirt today of all days?

With her arms wrapped around his neck, trying to make sure her forearm was holding the quilt in place, there was no way to rescue the hem of her skirt, which was riding higher and higher on her thighs. Thighs that were becoming sensitized by rubbing against his lean hips. She could hear him breathing from the exertion of going down some of the steeper parts of the hill, and one time his foot slid on some loose gravel and she closed her eyes, expecting to crash to the ground. But she didn’t. He’d righted himself and kept on walking.

“I should have let you find a stick.”

“I don’t think I could hold a walking stick.”

She shook her head, even though she knew he couldn’t see her. “I mean a stick to throw at the snake.”

“No,” Several more steps. “You did the right thing.”

“Why don’t you stop and take a rest?”

His head swiveled from right to left as he shook it to mean no. “If I put you down, I know you well enough to know you’ll never get up again. Not that much farther.”

He was right. There was no way she’d make him carry her again. If she’d realized how far they’d come, she’d have never agreed to this stupid plan in the first place. But here she was. And he was still going back for the shoe afterward.

Why hadn’t she just let him pick it up? Thinking about it, she’d probably sounded extremely childish, saying she wouldn’t wear the shoe. But she had a phobia of snakes. She didn’t know what had possessed her to try to scare the thing away anyway. Maybe because she’d pictured Diego picking up some kind of stick and getting close enough to its fangs to get bitten, too. If it had come toward them, would she have stood her ground? Or abandoned her patient? Thank heaven she hadn’t had to make that choice.

“I’m sorry, Diego. It was stupid of me to leave my shoe behind.”

He gave a chuckle. “I’m rather enjoying this.”

His breathing didn’t quite sound like he was enjoying it. Then again, her breathing wasn’t exactly steady, either, but there was a completely different reason for that. With his arms looped under her legs, it was as if he were holding her in place—holding her tightly against his body. If he’d been facing her rather than having his back to her... Her thighs rubbed again, and sensation arced with lightning speed to the area he would have been touching. Oh, man, it didn’t bear thinking about.

She tried to pull air in and out of her lungs in slow deep breaths, but her brain had already shifted onto another track. She wasn’t going to survive this.

Even now her nipples were tightening, every jostle of his body providing a delicious friction that made her want to whimper and press closer. Instead she tried to lean slightly back to take the pressure off.
